Genetic engineering or breeding entails deliberate modifications of the characteristics of an organism by manipulating its genetic makeup. This technique has been used to develop crops which are high yielding, resistance to pest and disease, high nutritional value, high oil content etc. Genetic engineering technique offers mankind the ability to develop crops with desirable characteristics within a very short period compared to conventional breeding methods.
