Abstract or Summary

According to World Bank, India loses over $12 billion annually in GDP to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Iron deficiency is the sixth most serious problem for human health. In India alone, about 80% of the pregnant women, 52% of non-pregnant women, and 74% of children in the 6-35 months age group suffer from iron deficiency. About 52% of children below 5 year are zinc deficient. Malnutrition is a serious health issue in India, and to realize India free from malnutrition ‘‘Kuposhan Mukt Bharat’’ by 2022. Production of iron and zinc enriched food crops by biofortification has a great potential to combat this problem
