Abstract or Summary

Agricultural biotechnologies provide opportunities to address the significant challenges of ensuring food security without destroying the environmental resource base. Because most of the world’s poor live in rural areas, there is a need to facilitate greater access, for poor rural producers, to technologies that can increase the productivity of smallholder agriculture and help reduce rural poverty. This document highlights lessons learned, and options for the future for developing countries in relation to harnessing agricultural biotechnologies for food security and agricultural sustainability. In addition, the document provides a series of Priorities for Action for consideration by the international community that focus on both policy and capacity development
