Abstract or Summary

In Hawaii, the genetically modified (GM) papaya has been cultivated since 1998 to deal with the papaya ringspot virus. The Hawaiian GM papaya was developed by the public sector and the intellectual property rights were transferred to the local papaya industry. The adoption of the virus resistant papaya rescued the Hawaiian papaya industry and inspired many other countries to look for a similar solution to deal with plant viruses.
